Argan stem cells.

All plants have stem cells. Unlike animals cells, however, each plant cell has the potential to change the shape and function of a stem cell and become a completely new plant. PhytoCellTec™ is a new biotechnology used successfully to generate and culture plant stem cells. With this technology, it is possible to induce the growth of callus cells in plant tissues selected under special conditions. These callus cells are undifferentiated plant elements, in other words, stem cells. The next step consists of a large-scale culture of these stem cells in bioreactors specially developed to obtain larger amounts of plant stem cells.

One of the most interesting stem cells in the cosmetic sector, due to the multiple benefits it brings to the scalp, is the argan stem cell. The argan tree (Argania spinosa) belongs to one of the oldest tree species in the world and only grows in southwest Morocco. Argan trees are able to resist severe, long-lasting droughts and extremely high temperatures. Nowadays, they are an endangered species and, as such, cannot be used as a raw material for cosmetic purposes.

This type of plant, classified as at risk of extinction, contains ingredients that are particularly valuable and of great interest in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic sector. Recent research shows the absolute efficacy of argan stem cells due to their ability to stimulate cell regeneration in the root of the scalp. The results demonstrate the potential of PhytoCellTec Argan™ to challenge the degeneration of hair growth due to ageing.

PhytoCellTec Argan™ is the first active ingredient able to protect and, at the same time, revitalise human dermal cells. The dermal papilla, at the base of the hair bulb, is a focal point for the dermal progenitor stem cells. These stem cells of the root are key to hair growth and to the formation of the hair follicle.

It has been demonstrated that Argan stem cells stop the loss of progenitor stem cells, promote the production of cells in the root and stimulate the cell repair processes to specifically treat both androgenic and senescent hair loss.

A study performed by Mibelle Biochemistry obtained significant benefits in important characteristics of the dermal stem cells: when 0.1% argan stem cell extract was applied, a significant improvement was seen in the expression of the Sox2 stem cell marker, increasing the number of secondary spheres by 89% in comparison to untreated controls in aged dermal skin cells, improving their activity. Thus, newly activated, the dermal stem cells are able to stimulate the formation of hair follicles and hair growth in humans, favouring healthy growth of the scalp and hair as the dermal density increases.
