Male-pattern hair loss is an important cosmetic concern that affects both sexes, although predominantly men. The main causes of hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals include hormonal dysfunction, loss of proteins from the extracellular matrix in the follicular bed and localised microinflammation.
To correct this problem an active cosmetic ingredient combining red clover extract (Trifolium Pratense) and a biomimetic peptide (acetyl tetrapeptide-3) has been developed and clinically tested for preventing hair loss.
Red clover extract
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a legume plant native to Europe, western Asia and north-west Africa. Its small pink flowers are edible and are used to decorate and add flavour to salads and drinks. The green leaves are alternate and trifoliate. Each leaflet is about 15-30 mm long and 8-15 mm wide, and the outer half is crescent shaped. The green leaves of the herb are used to make herbal tea for therapeutic purposes.
The extract of this plant has been the focus of many research studies due to its richness in isoflavones, natural oestrogens that strengthen the hair and prevent dandruff and scalp irritation. Its combination with biomimetic peptides has given the best results, leading to the development of a single ingredient that combines these two active substances: Capixyl™, which is present in REDENHAIR intensive treatment products.
Acetyl tetrapeptide-3 (biomimetic peptide)
Biomimetic peptides are agents that have specific actions that mimic those of normal peptides in our body. Their application to the scalp stimulates cell proliferation and controls cell differentiation, participating in intercellular communication and stimulating hair follicle development.
These biomimetic peptides are designed and tested to perform biological activity without toxic effects and to allow chemical modifications to be made to the peptide chain in order to achieve more stable and efficient molecules.
This is the case of acetyl tetrapeptide-3, a biomimetic peptide consisting of four amino acids that stimulates tissue regeneration. This peptide enhances the formation of proteins in the extracellular matrix of the dermal papilla, thereby having a direct effect on the size and anchoring of the hair follicle. Efficacy studies have shown its effect on the scalp, achieving the best results when combined with red clover extract. This combination provides complete revitalisation of the follicles, improves blood circulation and helps nourish and oxygenate the roots, increasing the thickness, volume and strength of the hair.
Clinical studies
The study that showed the powerful effect of combining these active ingredients was carried out in France by the R&D department of Lucas Meyer Cosmetics. Thirty volunteers with a receding hairline were randomly recruited and divided into two groups: one group was given placebo and the other was given a product with the combination of red clover extract and acetyl tetrapeptide-3.
The clinical efficacy after daily topical application of the mixture to the scalp was assessed using a digital analysis device that quickly, accurately and painlessly measures hair density and the proportion of hairs in the anagen or telogen growth phase. This diagnosis makes it possible to quantify the degree of alopecia and, if performed periodically, can also be used to assess its evolution.
During the 4 months after application of the product containing the combination of these two active ingredients, the hairs in the anagen phase increased by +13% on average, the density of hairs in the telogen phase decreased by -29%, and the ratio of hairs in the anagen/telogen (A/T) phase increased by +46% with respect to baseline in the treated group.
The results differed greatly from those of the placebo group, so the research into the potential mechanisms involved in the positive effects on hair growth of the test product with the two active ingredients was very satisfactory. Inhibition of 5-α-reductase activity, reduction of inflammatory reactions and stimulation of protein synthesis in the extracellular matrix of hair follicles were the three key mechanisms that were demonstrated in the study, in addition to many others that could not be scientifically proven.
Where to find this combination of active ingredients
After reading about the effective clinical studies of this powerful combination of active ingredients, you will surely want to know where it can be found.
