Methylsulphonylmethane or MSM is an organic, sulphur-based, white crystalline substance found in plant and animal tissues. In the human body it is mainly needed for the health of connective tissue, being present in hair, nails and skin.
This compound is formed in nature when a gas (dimethylsulphide) is released from the ocean into the atmosphere. When dimethylsulphide is exposed to sunlight, it is transformed into dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO or DMSO2) and is returned to the soil in rain. Plants in turn absorb DMSO/DMSO2 through the roots. However, MSM can now be produced with equal efficacy in the laboratory.
One of the main functions of MSM is to preserve structural proteins and form the keratin proteins that conform the hair fibre and improve the immune system. On the other hand, MSM is also indicated to combat pain and inflammation, increase blood flow, soften scar tissue and reduce muscle spasms.
Hair contains a protein called keratin, produced in the follicles of the external layer of the skin. As the follicles produce new ciliated cells, the old cells are expelled through the surface of the skin. Methylsulphonylmethane is necessary for collagen and keratin production. It is therefore a key ingredient for the prevention of hair loss and to stimulate strong and healthy growth.
A study carried out in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Yeungnam (South Korea) used MSM in combination with magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) to investigate hair growth. Mice were administered a solution containing a constant 7.5% concentration of MAP in combination with MSM at concentrations of 1%, 5% and 10%. The study showed the hair growth rate to be directly proportional to the percentage of MSM in each test group, and the 10% MSM solution was effectively seen to be of great help in treating hair loss or alopecia (Shanmugam, S., Baskaran, B., Nagayya-Sriraman, S., Yong, C.S., Choi, H.G., Woo, J.S. and Yoo, B.K. (2009); The effect of methylsulfonylmethane on hair growth promotion of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate for the treatment of alopecia. Biomol. Ther. 17, 241-248).
This substance, administered as a dietetic supplement, is a natural source of sulphur and sulphur is a very important nutrient for the health of hair, skin, nails and cartilage. In fact, people who use this supplement have experienced faster hair growth, since this kind of ingredient administered as a food supplement helps nurture hair and stimulates its growth. A study conducted by the Oregon Health and Science University reported an increase in the hair growth phase (anagen phase) among the participants following the use of MSM during 6 weeks. In addition to faster hair growth, many people also reported an increase in hair thickness.
Sulphur is necessary for healthy collagen and keratin production and also to improve blood flow in the scalp, favouring hair growth. In addition to ensuring healthy hair growth, sulphur increases hair brightness; it is therefore included in many treatments for alopecia.
Much of the MSM contained in food is broken down before it can be used by the body, since it is very sensitive to cooking temperatures and oxidation. However, administration with food supplements ensures that the MSM consumed can be fully used for our hair. In this regard, at REDENHAIR we work daily to offer products that satisfy the needs of all of our customers. If you want to stimulate strong and healthy hair growth and at the same time prevent hair loss, we recommend HAIR NUTRITION SUPPLEMENT from REDENHAIR. You won't be disappointed!
