What is L-arginine?
L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that is involved many important functions in the human body. The term semi-essential infers that our body, generally, synthesises sufficient amounts of it. Nevertheless, some people with certain health conditions and in certain circumstances may require a supplement of this substance to prevent imbalances and to benefit from its great properties.
As a precursor of nitric oxide (NO), it plays a vitally important role in hair growth, as its vasodilating effect favours hair growth. The abundant nitrogen monoxide it releases opens the potassium channels of the cells, thus improving the blood supply to the hair follicle, which in turn stimulates hair growth.
Functions of L-arginine
As it is converted into nitrogen monoxide, L-arginine causes the blood vessels to relax, known as vasodilation. Due to its involvement in this process, it is of great use in treating conditions that benefit from vasodilation. L-arginine helps convert the ammonia present in the body into urea so it can be eliminated as a waste product. When the production of proteins is stimulated, this amino acid is very useful in developing the hair follicles.
It is known that products containing L-arginine reduce the factors that cause poor hair follicle development or weaken the shaft of the hair, thus promoting hair growth. In a comparative study using products for topical application with L-arginine, the ability of this amino acid to stimulate the blood microcirculation, providing essential nutrients for the growth of the hair bulb, was demonstrated.
Benefits of L-arginine
It stimulates the hair follicles
As we have already seen, the role of L-arginine in hair growth can be improved by its association with nitrogen monoxide, especially in people with low levels of nitric oxide or who have a diet deficient in this substance.
For these people, arginine greatly helps with generating nitric oxide and compensating this deficiency, opening up the potassium channels within the cells. With the vasodilating effect of potassium, the blood vessels dilate, improving blood flow and circulation, resulting in increased blood supply to the hair follicles, which stimulates hair growth.
Protects the hair's natural colour
Arginine is capable of protecting the hair from the excessive damage caused by hair bleaching. A study demonstrated that arginine prevents the harmful, weakening effects of hydrogen peroxide on the hair, also known as the oxidative colouring process.
The study stated that when you colour your hair, the hydrogen peroxide actually attacks the natural oils and proteins in the structure of the hair, weakening it. In this study, the researchers replaced the ammonia with arginine and demonstrated that arginine really penetrated the hair fibres, resulting in significantly stronger hair.
Products for topical application with L-arginine
As well as following a diet rich in L-arginine, you can use products with this amino acid in their formulations that, used topically, are essential for promoting hair growth. REDENHAIR HAIR REGENERATOR SERUM FORTE and REDENHAIR HAIR REGENERATOR MANTENIMIENTO are the most effective examples.
Both serums complement each other: on the one hand, HAIR REGENERATOR SERUM FORTE prevents hair loss while boosting the regeneration of the hair follicles, which results in a very effective treatment to prevent hair loss and keep the scalp healthy. On the other hand, HAIR REGENERATOR SERUM MAINTENANCE is a product initially designed to maintain the results obtained with HAIR REGENERATOR SERUM FORTE, also further benefiting the hair thanks to its innovative composition based on state-of-the-art technology.
If you are thinking of adding L-arginine to your hair routine, don't hesitate to purchase both products! It's the easiest way to have healthy hair in the short and long-term, with no side effects at all.
