Europapress has published an article where Dr. Gonçal Lloveras, a graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and with a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota (ISA), details the curious relationship between androgens, cause of androgenetic alopecia, and COVID-19 infection.
As its name indicates, androgenetic alopecia involves the action of hormones called androgens, essential for male sexual development and with important functions in both sexes, including sexual desire and regulation of hair growth. This condition can be inherited and involve several different genes and may also be the result of an underlying endocrine condition, such as excessive androgen production. In any case, this type of baldness is directly related to increased androgenic activity, may occur at any time after puberty and its incidence increases with age.
Covid-19 and alopecia
Dr. Gonçal Lloveras comments that, although there is a big difference between alopecia and infection by COVID-19, they do have a clear relationship based on a greater sensitivity to androgens, as they have published in the journal Dermatologic Therapy.
In androgenetic alopecia there is a greater sensitivity to these androgens, which include a series of male hormones that are also found in the female sex, but in a smaller percentage. From there we see its relationship with COVID-19: considering the lethality of the virus, 66% of men die compared to 34% of women. As commented in this study, this is due to testosterone, which is more aggressive in the body than estrogens (female hormones) and is able to significantly worsen the cardiovascular system.
This discovery could be of great help for the future detection of patients with more risk of illness and worsening by the virus, from a diagnostic study of their hair, so patients with more severe androgenetic alopecia would be more likely to suffer from this disease in a serious way.
Nor should it be forgotten that women, although having a lower level of androgens, may also suffer from diseases that increase them and thus become more susceptible.
This study has triggered in many others where it is being observed that patients admitted by COVID-19 have a common pattern in hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia. "We would be facing infinite therapeutic and preventive possibilities for this new pandemic," says Dr. Gonçal Lloveras, "which is a fascinating challenge from the point of view of science and a hope for all of us."
Treatment for androgenetic alopecia
To overcome androgenetic alopecia, it is necessary to resort to the most effective products and with compositions that nourish the hair follicles. Dr. Gonçal Lloveras recommends Redanhair for having the most complete treatment on the market to inhibit the formation of DHT, the main cause of hair loss.
In the studies carried out in the treatment with the Hair Regenerator Serum Forte and the Hair Nutrition Supplement it has been confirmed that it is 90% more potent than the known Minoxidil, up to now of the few remedies recommended by doctors but which may have serious side effects on health.
These advances have been demonstrated by clinical studies carried out by an external company, demonstrating that Redenhair is the only effective treatment in which 100% of users affirm a clear hair growth accompanied by an increase in brightness, strength and overall health of the hair.
